Join Dawson Church, author of the nonfiction book, The Genie in Your Genes (Energy Psychology Press – Elite Books, May 2009), as he virtually tours the blogosphere in May on his first virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion!
Epigenetics might sound exotic, but it’s based on some simple principles. All human beings have a collection of 23,688 genes in each of our cells. Each gene contains the blueprints for building a particular protein, or a set of proteins. Proteins (after the Greek word protas, meaning “of primary importance”) are big, complex molecules that drive every part of our function (physiology) and structure (anatomy).
When you get a cut on your arm, for instance, the blank cells available nearby (stem cells) differentiate into skin cells and muscle cells to repair the damage. Proteins are built to replace the cells in the wounded tissue. The wound triggers this differentiation. It’s an epigenetic signal that generates cellular activity.
Stress also sends epigenetic signals to the body. If a mountain lion rushes toward you, fangs bared, the stress of seeing a predator results in epigenetic signals being sent to your cells. You produce proteins like adrenaline and cortisol, which enable your body to respond rapidly to this objective threat. However, when you think about an unpleasant event, like a family fight or a workplace conflict, and feel anger, resentment, or similar emotions, this subjective experience send similar epigenetic signals to your body. My book The Genie in Your Genes (www.GenieBestseller.com) delves deep into the science behind these phenomena, and the therapies we can use to send positive, healing epigenetic signals to our cells.
